Xconq
Command armies across dozens of historical, fantastic and experimental turn-based scenarios.
Stan Shebs and contributors, 1995

A strategy-game construction kit
Xconq is both a turn-based strategy game and a system for building new ones. Version 7.0.1 ships with more than fifty choices ranging from introductory and standard matches to Napoleon's 1805 campaign, ancient Greece, exploration, science fiction and Second World War scenarios. Each module can define its own terrain, units, economy, sides and victory conditions.
The Macintosh interface presents the battlefield as a scrolling hex map. Select units with the mouse, inspect terrain and objectives in the side panels, and use the menus and keyboard commands to issue orders. Multiplayer support is included, while the bundled scenarios also support local computer-controlled opponents.
Preserved with its source
This catalogue entry uses the complete, unchanged Xconq 7.0.1 Macintosh distribution. The matching complete source code is provided alongside it under GNU GPL version 2.
Systemless was tested beyond startup: a deterministic run opened the scenario picker, selected the Austrian campaign of 1805, entered the live hex map and processed map input. That test also uncovered a generic hidden-dialog visibility bug in Systemless; the resulting regression fix now keeps Xconq's scenario list, artwork and description panes visible when the game window is shown.
